What Is a Confluence to Markdown Converter?
A Confluence to markdown converter rewrites Atlassian wiki markup, or the HTML of a rendered Confluence page, as standard markdown so the content can live in a Git repository, a docs site or any markdown editor. Confluence markup has its own notation for headings (h2.), emphasis (*bold*), code ({code}), tables (||header||) and macros, none of which markdown tools understand.
This confluence wiki markup converter works in both directions. Paste Confluence markup to get markdown, or paste markdown to get Confluence markup ready for the Insert → Markup dialog. Both conversions run in the browser.
How to Convert a Confluence Page to Markdown
- Open the page in Confluence. Either select and copy the rendered content, or open the storage format and copy the XHTML.
- Paste into the left pane. A small “HTML detected” badge appears when the input is HTML; wiki markup is parsed directly.
- Read the markdown in the right pane. Tick Show rendered preview to check headings, tables and callouts.
- Fix anything the source left ambiguous, such as tables without a header row.
- Copy the result or download the .md file.

Markdown to Confluence
The reverse direction turns a markdown document into Confluence markup. Fenced code becomes {code:lang} blocks (or {noformat} when there is no language), pipe tables become ||header|| and |cell| rows, task list items get (/) and (x) markers, and GitHub callouts turn into the matching info, tip, note or warning macro. In Confluence Cloud, open the editor, choose Insert → Markup, pick Confluence wiki and paste. Server and Data Center accept the same markup through the same dialog.
When to Use a Confluence to Markdown Converter
Moving a knowledge base to a docs-as-code setup, publishing internal runbooks to a public site, or mirroring a page into a README all start with the same step: get the content out of Confluence in a form Git can diff. A confluence to markdown converter handles the mechanical part so the migration is a review rather than a retype. Keep the markdown to Confluence direction for the opposite case, when a document written in a markdown editor has to be published where the rest of the company reads it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get the wiki markup out of a Confluence page?
Confluence Cloud no longer shows wiki markup in the editor, but you can copy the rendered page and paste it here: the tool detects the HTML and converts it. If you have access to the storage format (Insert → Markup, or the REST API with expand=body.storage), paste that XHTML instead and the ac:structured-macro blocks for code, info panels, tasks and images are handled too.
Does the confluence to markdown converter handle info, note, warning and tip panels?
Yes. {info}, {note}, {warning} and {tip} macros become GitHub-style callouts such as > [!NOTE] and > [!WARNING], with the panel title in bold. {panel} and {expand} blocks become plain blockquotes. Going the other way, callouts in your markdown become the matching Confluence macros.
Can I convert markdown to Confluence wiki markup?
Switch the direction to Markdown → Confluence. Headings become h1. to h6., emphasis becomes *bold* and _italic_, fenced code becomes {code:lang}, tables become ||header|| rows and nested lists use ** and ##. Paste the result with Insert → Markup → Confluence wiki in the page editor.
What happens to nested lists and tables?
Confluence nests lists by repeating the marker (** for a second-level bullet, ## for a second-level number). The converter turns those into indented markdown lists and back. Tables with ||header|| cells become pipe tables; a table without a header row uses its first row as the markdown header because GFM requires one.
Is anything sent to Atlassian or to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. Nothing you paste is uploaded, and the tool does not connect to your Confluence site.
