What Is a Markdown Table Generator?

A markdown table generator is a visual editor that turns cells you type into a grid into the pipe-and-dash syntax that GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, Notion and most static site generators render as a table. You edit rows and columns like a small spreadsheet, and the tool writes the header line, the separator line with alignment colons and every data row with the pipes lined up.

Writing table markdown by hand is easy for two columns and painful for eight, because every row must have the same number of cells and one stray pipe breaks the whole block. A markdown table maker removes that bookkeeping: the grid always stays rectangular, and the output is regenerated on every keystroke.

How to Create a Markdown Table

  1. Type your column names into the header row of the grid, then fill in the cells below. Press Enter to jump to the next row; a new row is added when you reach the last one.
  2. Use Add row and Add column, or the small × buttons, to change the shape of the table.
  3. Click the alignment icon above a column to cycle through default, left, center and right alignment.
  4. Already have the data? Open Import from CSV, TSV or a markdown table, paste it and click Import.
  5. Copy the markdown from the output pane, or download it as a .md file, and paste it into your README, issue or note.

Markdown Table Syntax Reference

The generator writes standard GitHub Flavored Markdown. These are the pieces it produces:

ElementSyntaxNotes
Header row| Name | Price |Required; the first line of the table
Separator| --- | --- |At least three dashes per column
Left align| :--- |Colon on the left
Center align| :---: |Colons on both sides
Right align| ---: |Colon on the right; use for numbers
Pipe in a cella \| bBackslash escape
Line break in a cellfirst<br>secondHTML break tag
Inline formatting**bold**, `code`, [link](url)Works inside cells

GitHub Markdown Table Tips

A GitHub markdown table needs a blank line before it, otherwise it is glued to the previous paragraph and rendered as text. Column widths are decided by the content, not by the padding you add in the source, so the Pad columns option only affects readability of the raw file. Turn padding off when a table has long cells and you want the diff in a pull request to stay small.

Tables cannot contain block elements such as lists, code fences or headings. Keep each cell to a short phrase, a number or a link, and move longer explanations under the table. If you need merged cells or nested content, use the HTML table generator instead and paste the HTML into your markdown file.

When to Use a Markdown Table Maker

Reach for a markdown table generator whenever the data already exists somewhere else: a CSV export, a spreadsheet, a Jira ticket or a database query. Paste it, adjust alignment, and copy the result instead of retyping pipes. It is also the fastest way to fix a table that renders as plain text, because the grid shows immediately which row has a missing cell. Once the table is in your document, use the markdown table formatter to sort rows or transpose it later without rebuilding it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the leading and trailing pipes in a markdown table?

No. GitHub Flavored Markdown accepts rows with or without outer pipes, as long as every row has the same number of cells. The markdown table generator adds them anyway because they make the table easier to read as plain text and some renderers, including older wiki engines, require them.

How do I align columns in a markdown table?

Put colons in the separator line under the header. :--- aligns left, :---: centers and ---: aligns right. Click the alignment icon above any column in the grid and the separator line updates for you.

How do I put a pipe character inside a cell?

Escape it as \| so the renderer does not treat it as a column boundary. The Escape pipes option does this automatically for every cell, which matters for regular expressions, shell commands and Unix pipelines.

Can a cell contain multiple lines?

Not with plain newlines, because each table row must stay on one line. Use the HTML tag <br> inside the cell instead; GitHub, GitLab and most static site generators render it as a line break. The generator converts newlines typed into a cell to <br> for you.

Is my table data uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser. The grid, the CSV import and the markdown output never leave your device.
