What Is a Markdown Viewer?
A markdown viewer is a read-only renderer that turns a .md file into formatted text with headings, lists, tables, code blocks and images, the way GitHub or a documentation site would display it. This md file viewer opens local files, pasted text or a URL, adds a table of contents from the headings, and shows the word count and reading time in the header.
Files opened from your device are rendered in the browser and never uploaded. Only the optional URL loader touches our server, and it does not store what it fetches.
How to Open an MD File
- Click Open .md file and choose a file, or drag the file onto the viewer area.
- Or paste a link to a raw markdown file in the URL box and click Load URL.
- Or switch to Source or Split view and paste markdown into the text area.
- Use the contents sidebar to jump between sections of a long document.
- Click Print for a paper copy or a PDF, Download .md to save, or Copy markdown to reuse the text.
Supported Syntax in the Markdown Renderer
| Feature | Syntax | Rendered as |
|---|---|---|
| Headings | # to ###### | H1–H6 with ids for the table of contents |
| Tables | | a | b | | HTML table with alignment |
| Task lists | - [x] done | Checkboxes |
| Code | ```ts … ``` | Preformatted block with language class |
| Math | $E = mc^2$ or $$…$$ | KaTeX inline or display equation |
| Diagrams | ```mermaid … ``` | SVG flowchart, sequence or Gantt diagram |
| Line breaks | single newline | Hard line break, as on GitHub comments |
Rendered, Source and Split Views
Rendered view is for reading. Source view shows the raw markdown in a monospace text area you can edit, which is where to paste text you copied from elsewhere. Split view puts both side by side so an edit on the left updates the preview on the right, useful for checking how a table or a formula will look before you commit the file. The table of contents follows the rendered view and updates as headings change.
When to Use an Online Markdown Viewer
A markdown viewer is the fastest way to read a README someone sent you, check a documentation page before committing it, or review a .md export from a note-taking app without opening an editor. Most answers to “how do I open md file downloads” start with installing something; this page needs no install. Because it accepts a URL, you can also link colleagues directly to a rendered view of a raw file in a repository. When you need to edit seriously, convert to PDF or Word, or share a hosted copy, the related tools below pick up where the viewer stops.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I open an md file without installing anything?
Click Open .md file and pick the file, or drag it from your file manager onto the page. The markdown viewer reads it in your browser and renders it immediately; the file is never uploaded. .markdown and .txt files work the same way.
Can the md viewer load a file from a URL?
Yes. Paste a link to a raw markdown file and click Load URL, or open this page with ?url=https://… appended. GitHub and GitLab “blob” links are rewritten to the raw file automatically. Files are fetched by our server because browsers block cross-site reads, capped at 2 MB, and not stored.
What markdown features does the renderer support?
GitHub Flavored Markdown including tables, task lists, strikethrough, fenced code blocks and autolinks, plus LaTeX math through KaTeX and Mermaid diagrams in mermaid code fences. Inline HTML is rendered as written.
How do I print or save the rendered document as PDF?
Click Print. A print stylesheet hides the navigation, toolbar and sidebar so only the rendered document is sent to the printer, and choosing Save as PDF in the print dialog gives you a PDF. For a PDF with more layout control use the Markdown to PDF converter linked below.
Can I edit the markdown here?
The source and split views include an editable text area, so you can paste markdown or make quick edits and see them rendered. Copy markdown and Download .md take the current text with you. For a full editor with saving and export, open the main editor.
