What Is a Markdown Link?

A markdown link is text in square brackets followed by a URL in parentheses, [text](url), which renders as a clickable hyperlink. The same pattern with a leading exclamation mark, ![alt](url), embeds a markdown image. Both are easy to mistype: a space in the URL, an unescaped bracket in the text or a missing closing parenthesis silently breaks the link. This markdown link generator builds the syntax from separate fields, encodes the URL, escapes the text and shows a rendered preview so you can see it works before pasting.

Four tabs cover the related jobs: Link, Image, Slug (a url slug generator for post and page URLs) and Anchor (links to headings on the same page). Apart from the optional Fetch title request, everything runs in your browser.

How to Generate a Link, Image, Slug or Anchor

  1. Link: paste the URL, click Fetch title to fill the text from the page, choose inline, reference or autolink style, and copy.
  2. Image: enter the image URL and alt text, set a width or height and pick HTML or pipe syntax, optionally wrap the image in a link.
  3. Slug: type a title; choose the separator, lowercase, stop-word removal, accent transliteration and a maximum length.
  4. Anchor: paste a heading to get its GitHub id and a [text](#anchor) link.
  5. Every tab updates as you type; use the Copy button on the output pane.

Using the Slug Generator for URLs

A slug is the readable part of a URL after the last slash, and the slug generator turns a title into one that is safe everywhere: lowercase ASCII letters, digits and a separator. Hyphens are the convention for web pages because search engines treat them as word boundaries; underscores are common for file names and anchors. Keep slugs under about 60 characters, drop stop words only when the meaning survives, and never change a slug after publishing without a redirect.

Common Markdown Link Mistakes

The most frequent markdown link errors are a space between ] and (, which turns the link into plain text; spaces or parentheses inside the URL, which end it early; and an alt text that is left as "image" instead of describing the picture. The generator percent-encodes spaces and parentheses and escapes square brackets in the text. When a document has dozens of links, reference style keeps the prose readable, and this markdown image and link tool writes the definition line for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the syntax for a markdown link?

Square brackets for the text, then parentheses for the URL: [Markdown Guide](https://www.markdownguide.org). An optional title in quotes after the URL becomes the hover tooltip. A markdown link can also be written in reference style, with [text][label] in the sentence and [label]: url at the bottom of the file.

How do I add an image in markdown with a specific width?

Standard markdown image syntax, ![alt](url), has no size option. Use an HTML tag instead: <img src="url" alt="alt" width="300">, which GitHub, GitLab and most blogs accept. Obsidian and some wikis support the pipe form ![alt|300x200](url); the Image tab writes either one.

What does the Fetch title button do?

It asks our server to load the page, read its og:title or <title> tag and meta description, and fill in the link text for you. The request is limited to http and https URLs, 8 seconds and 1 MB, and the page content is not stored. It does not count against any conversion limit.

How does the slug generator handle accents and stop words?

With Transliterate on, accented letters are mapped to plain ASCII (é to e, ß to ss, ø to o) so the slug is safe in any URL. Strip stop words removes short function words such as a, the, of and for, which keeps slugs short without losing meaning. A maximum length cuts at a word boundary.

How do I link to a heading on the same page?

Use the Anchor tab. Paste the heading and you get the GitHub anchor id and a ready [text](#anchor) link. The rule is: lowercase, remove punctuation, replace spaces with hyphens. For a whole document of heading links, use the table of contents generator.
