What Is a Markdown Resume?

A markdown resume is a CV written as plain text with markdown headings, bullets and emphasis, then rendered to PDF or Word for sending. Because the source is text, it lives in git, diffs cleanly between versions, is easy to tailor per application and never breaks the way a word-processor layout does when you add a line.

This markdown resume builder gives you a template, a preview that looks like the printed page, a checklist for applicant tracking systems (ATS) and one-click PDF and Word downloads.

How to Build a Resume in Markdown

  1. Pick a markdown resume template that matches your field; the editor loads it with sample content.
  2. Replace the header: your name as the H1, your title on the next line, then one contact line with email, phone, city and a link.
  3. For each job, use ### Position — Company followed by an italic date line and three to five achievement bullets that start with a verb and include a number.
  4. Fill Education, Skills (bold category, comma-separated keywords) and any Projects or Certifications.
  5. Check the ATS list on the right, then download the PDF, the Word file or the markdown.

ATS Tips for a Markdown CV

  • Keep a single column. ATS parsers read left to right and mix up two-column layouts.
  • Use the standard section names: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills. Parsers look for them by name.
  • Spell out dates as Month Year; ranges with an en dash (Mar 2021 – Present) are read correctly.
  • Put keywords from the job posting in the Skills section and in the bullets where they are true.
  • No tables, images, icons or text in headers and footers. Links are fine as plain URLs or link text.
  • Export to PDF for applications and keep the Word version for recruiters who ask for an editable file.

Why Keep Your Resume in Markdown

A markdown resume is the version you tailor from: duplicate the file, reorder bullets for the role, export, and keep the original in version control. The JSON Resume import means a CV you already keep as structured data can come in with one paste, and the export means the markdown can feed any JSON Resume theme. Everything but the PDF and Word rendering happens in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a markdown resume ATS-friendly?

Yes, more than most designed templates. A markdown resume exported to PDF is a single column of real text with standard headings, which is exactly what applicant tracking systems parse best. Avoid tables, images, icons and two-column layouts; the checklist next to the editor flags them.

Which markdown resume template should I use?

Classic suits most roles: summary, dated experience with achievement bullets, education, skills. Developer groups skills by language and infrastructure and links projects. Minimal drops the summary for licensed professions where credentials matter more. Modern puts skills before education for marketing and design roles.

What is JSON Resume and can I import it?

JSON Resume is an open schema (jsonresume.org) for storing a CV as structured data. Paste a JSON Resume document with Import JSON Resume and it becomes markdown in the same layout as the templates; Export JSON Resume converts your markdown back, best effort, so you can use the schema's themes.

How do I download the resume as PDF or Word?

Click Download PDF or Download Word under the preview. The markdown is sent to the converter and the file comes back with heading styles applied. Both buttons share the free daily pool; the message shows the count if it is used up.

Can I write a markdown CV with more than one page?

You can, but keep it to two pages. The checklist warns above about 700 words. Recruiters spend under a minute on a first read, so put the strongest achievement bullets first and cut anything older than ten years to one line.
