What Are Markdown Slides?
Markdown slides are a presentation written as one plain-text markdown file, where a line containing only --- starts a new slide and ordinary headings, lists, code blocks and tables become the slide content. The format was popularised by Marp, reveal.js and Slidev because a deck in text is easy to version in git, diff in a pull request and edit without a slide designer.
This markdown to slides converter parses that syntax in the browser, shows a scaled 16:9 preview with a thumbnail strip and speaker notes, and exports the deck as a PowerPoint file, a standalone HTML presentation or a PDF. It is a quick way to turn a README, a meeting agenda or a lecture outline into something you can present.
How to Convert Markdown to a Presentation
- Paste or write markdown in the editor. Start each new slide with a line that contains only
---. - Optionally add front matter at the top:
title: My talkandtheme: darkbetween two---lines. - Add speaker notes to a slide after a
???line. They never appear on the slide itself. - Pick a theme, click a thumbnail or use the ← → keys to move between slides, and press Present for fullscreen.
- Export: Download PPTX for PowerPoint or Google Slides, Download HTML deck for a file that runs anywhere, or Print / Save as PDF.

Markdown to PowerPoint, HTML or PDF
Choose the export by where the deck goes next. Markdown to pptx is right when someone else will edit the slides in PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides: each block becomes a real text box or table on a 16:9 layout, and notes travel with the slides. The HTML deck is best for presenting from any laptop or sharing a link, because it needs no software and keeps the exact theme, fonts and math rendering of the preview. The PDF is the safe hand-out format for conferences and email.
Layout in PowerPoint follows the order of blocks on the slide; a slide with more than one heading, a long list and a table will overflow, so keep each slide to one idea and split dense content across several slides, which also reads better on screen.
Writing a Good Markdown Presentation
A markdown presentation works best with one heading and at most six bullets per slide, code samples trimmed to the lines that matter, and images hosted at a public URL so both the HTML and PPTX exports can load them. Use front matter to set the theme once, put the agenda on slide two, and keep speaker notes under the ??? marker so the slides stay uncluttered. Because markdown slides are plain text, you can draft them in the site's markdown editor, check the word count with the reading time calculator, and version them alongside the code they describe.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I separate slides in markdown?
Put a line containing only three dashes (---) between slides, the same convention Marp, reveal.js and Slidev use. Lines inside fenced code blocks are ignored, so a YAML sample with --- in it stays on one slide. A --- block at the very top with key: value lines is treated as front matter for the deck title and theme.
Can I convert markdown to PowerPoint?
Yes. Click Download PPTX and the markdown slides are written to a 16:9 .pptx file with pptxgenjs. Headings become title boxes, paragraphs and lists become body text with bullets, code becomes a monospace box, tables become native PowerPoint tables and images with http(s) URLs are embedded. Open it in PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides to fine-tune.
How do I add speaker notes?
End a slide with a line containing ??? or <!-- notes --> and write the notes below it. Notes are shown in the Speaker notes pane, in the presenter bar during fullscreen, and are saved as PowerPoint notes in the PPTX export. They are hidden in the HTML deck and the PDF.
What is in the standalone HTML deck?
A single .html file with every slide rendered, the theme's CSS inlined, and a small script for arrow-key, click and hash navigation. It has no external dependencies, so it opens from a USB stick or an email attachment and prints one slide per page.
How do I get a PDF of the slides?
Click Print / Save as PDF. The page switches to a print layout with one landscape slide per page; choose Save as PDF as the destination in the browser dialog. For best results keep the default margins at none and background graphics on.
Is my markdown presentation uploaded anywhere?
No. Parsing, preview, HTML, PPTX and PDF generation all happen in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards the text unless you downloaded a file.
