```What Is a Discord Text Formatter?
A Discord text formatter is an editor that writes Discord markdown for you: click Bold, Spoiler or Code block and the right symbols are wrapped around your selection, with a preview showing how the message will look in the app. Discord supports a subset of markdown plus a few of its own additions, such as ||spoilers||, -# subtext and colored text through ANSI code blocks.
Type your message, select the words you want to style and press a toolbar button. The dark preview on the right updates as you type; the markdown pane below it is what you copy into Discord.
How to Format Text in Discord
- Write the message in the editor, or start from the sample.
- Select a word or line and press a toolbar button: Bold, Spoiler, Header, Block quote and so on.
- For a Discord code block, pick a language first, then press Code block; the language enables highlighting.
- For Discord colored text, use the ANSI builder: enter the text, choose colours, then Insert into message.
- Check the preview and press Copy message.
Discord Colored Text and Spoiler Text Explained
Colour is not part of Discord markdown; it comes from the desktop and web clients rendering ANSI escape codes inside an ansi code block. The escape character is followed by [, one or more codes separated by semicolons and m: 1 for bold, 4 for underline, 30–37 for text colours and 40–47 for backgrounds. [0m resets. The mobile apps show the block as plain monospace text without colour.
Discord spoiler text is simpler: two pipes on each side. Spoilers can wrap part of a sentence, and they work inside quotes and lists, but not inside code blocks.
Why Use This Discord Text Formatter
Remembering that __text__ is underline on Discord but bold in most markdown, or how the ANSI escape codes go together, is exactly the kind of detail a formatter should handle. This one keeps the cursor on your selection after applying a style, shows the message in a dark preview that matches the app, counts characters against the 2,000 limit, and never sends the message anywhere. Pair it with the Discord timestamp generator when a message needs a time that shows correctly for every member, and keep the Discord text formatter open while you write announcements.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make colored text in Discord?
Discord colored text works through code blocks with the ansi language: open a block with ```ansi, put an escape sequence such as [1;31m before the text and [0m after it. The ANSI builder in this Discord text formatter picks the colour and writes the codes for you; there are eight text colours and eight backgrounds.
How do spoilers work in Discord?
Wrap the text in double pipes: ||like this||. Discord spoiler text is hidden behind a grey box until the reader clicks it. Images can be marked as spoilers too, by adding SPOILER_ to the file name.
What is the difference between inline code and a code block?
Inline code uses single backticks and stays on the line, `like this`. A Discord code block uses three backticks on their own lines and can name a language, for example ```js, which turns on syntax highlighting.
Which Discord markdown does this formatter support?
Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, spoiler, inline code, code blocks with a language, block quotes, three header sizes, -# subtext, masked links, bullet and numbered lists, and ANSI colour blocks. The preview renders them the way the desktop app does.
Is there a character limit for Discord messages?
Yes, 2,000 characters for regular accounts and 4,000 with Nitro. The counter above the editor shows how much room is left; code fences and formatting markers count toward it.
