What Is a Markdown to Slack Converter?
A markdown to Slack converter rewrites standard markdown as Slack mrkdwn, the markup Slack uses in messages, so that bold, links and lists render properly when pasted. Slack looks like markdown but differs in most of the details: *bold* has one asterisk, links are <url|text>, there are no headings and no tables.
Paste markdown on the left and copy the Slack version on the right, or flip the direction to turn a message copied from Slack back into markdown for a document or a ticket.
How to Convert Markdown to Slack
- Leave the direction on Markdown → Slack and paste your markdown.
- Read the mrkdwn output and the Slack preview under it. Headings appear as bold lines, tables as code blocks.
- Press Copy and paste into the Slack message box. Send as usual; Slack renders the markup.
- To go the other way, choose Slack → Markdown and paste the message text from Slack.

| Strikethrough | ~~text~~ | ~text~ |
| Inline code | `code` | `code` |
| Code block | ```lang … ``` | ``` … ``` (no language) |
| Link | [text](url) | <url|text> |
| Quote | > text | > text |
| Bullet list | - item | • item |
| Heading | # Title | *Title* |
| Table | | a | b | | Code block with aligned columns |
Slack to Markdown and the Slack mrkdwn Converter Rules
The Slack to markdown direction handles what “Copy text” from Slack gives you: <https://url|label> links, <!channel> and user mentions, bullet characters, escaped > quotes and single-line ```code``` fences. Bold, italic and strikethrough are widened back to their two-character markdown forms.
In both directions inline code is protected first, so a `*literal*` stays literal. Slack does not accept a language after the opening fence, so it is dropped on the way in and cannot be recovered on the way out.
Why Use This Markdown to Slack Converter
Release notes, incident updates and meeting summaries are usually written in markdown and then pasted into a channel, where double asterisks and bare links look sloppy. Converting takes one paste here, the preview shows the message as Slack will show it, and nothing is sent to Slack or stored. When the same note also goes to Discord or WhatsApp, the sibling converters linked below use the same markdown input, and the markdown to Slack direction here covers the Slack copy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does markdown look wrong when pasted into Slack?
Slack uses its own markup called mrkdwn. Bold is a single *asterisk* rather than two, italic is _underscore_, strikethrough is a single ~tilde~ and links are written as <url|text>. A markdown to Slack converter rewrites those so the message renders correctly instead of showing stray symbols.
Does Slack support headings and tables?
No. Slack markdown has no headings, so a heading becomes a bold line. There are no tables either; this converter puts the table inside a code block with aligned columns, which is the most readable fallback.
How do I convert Slack to markdown?
Switch the direction to Slack → Markdown and paste the text you copied from Slack. Single-asterisk bold becomes **bold**, <url|text> becomes [text](url), bullets become - items and HTML entities such as > are decoded.
Which lists work in Slack?
Slack renders • bullets and 1. numbered lines as plain text, which looks like a list. Nested items are indented with two spaces. The Slack editor's own list formatting only applies when you type in the app, so pasted lists use bullet characters.
Is the text uploaded to Slack or anywhere else?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. Copy the output and paste it into Slack; the tool has no access to your workspace.
