What Is WhatsApp Formatting?

WhatsApp formatting is the set of symbols WhatsApp reads to style a message: *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italic, ~tildes~ for strikethrough and ```backticks``` for monospace, plus quotes and lists in recent versions. It is close to markdown but not the same, which is why **double asterisks** pasted from a document show up as literal symbols.

This WhatsApp text formatter converts markdown into the WhatsApp version and shows the result in a chat bubble, so you can check a long announcement or a business broadcast before sending it.

How to Format a WhatsApp Message

  1. Write or paste the message in markdown: **bold**, *italic*, ~~strike~~, - list, > quote.
  2. Read the WhatsApp text on the right; the chat preview shows how it renders.
  3. Press Copy and paste into a chat, group or broadcast list.
  4. If a style does not appear in WhatsApp, check that the symbols touch the text and stay on one line.

WhatsApp Bold Text and WhatsApp Italic Rules

WhatsApp bold text needs the asterisks directly against the first and last character. WhatsApp italic works the same way with underscores, and the two can be nested: *_bold italic_*. Strikethrough uses a single tilde. Monospace inside a sentence uses single backticks; a block of several lines uses three.

Styles cannot cross a line break, so a bold heading followed by a paragraph needs its own asterisks. Tables do not exist in WhatsApp; a markdown table becomes a monospace block so the columns line up.

Why Use This WhatsApp Formatting Tool

Writing a customer update, a team broadcast or a group announcement is easier in markdown, where headings and lists are natural. Converting it to WhatsApp formatting by hand means swapping every double asterisk and fixing every heading; here it happens as you type, with a bubble preview that catches mistakes before they reach the group. Nothing leaves your browser. The same markdown can go through the Slack and Discord converters linked below when the announcement is going to more than one app.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does WhatsApp formatting work?

WhatsApp formatting uses symbols around the text: one asterisk for *bold*, one underscore for _italic_, one tilde for ~strikethrough~ and three backticks for ```monospace```. Newer versions also support > for quotes, - for bullets and 1. for numbered lists. The symbols disappear when the message is sent.

How do I make WhatsApp bold text?

Put a single asterisk on each side of the text with no spaces inside: *like this*. In markdown you write **like this** with two asterisks; this WhatsApp text formatter converts between the two so you can paste markdown and get WhatsApp bold text.

Why does my formatting not show in WhatsApp?

The usual causes are a space between the symbol and the text (* bold* will not work), mixing symbols across lines, or a character limit in a business template. Formatting must open and close on the same line.

Does WhatsApp support headings and links?

There are no headings, so a markdown heading becomes a bold line. Links are pasted as the plain URL; if the markdown link had different text, the output uses “text: url” so both survive.

Is the message sent anywhere?

No. The conversion and the chat-bubble preview run in your browser. Copy the result and paste it into WhatsApp yourself.
