Thread Maker and Text Splitter for X

Free thread maker and text splitter. Turn a long post or markdown into numbered 280-character tweets for X, keeping sentences and links whole.

  1. Post 1272/280

What I learned writing documentation for a year Most documentation fails for one reason: it answers the questions the author had, not the ones the reader has. Start every page with the task the reader is trying to finish, then work backwards. Keep examples runnable. 1/4

  2. Post 2154/280

A snippet that cannot be pasted and executed is a promise the docs do not keep. Test them the same way you test code. Write the error messages first. 2/4

  3. Post 3207/280

If the product tells people what went wrong and what to do next, half of the support questions disappear before they are asked. Read more in the full guide: https://example.com/writing-docs-guide The rest is editing. 3/4

  4. Post 4106/280

Cut every sentence that explains why the feature is great and keep the ones that explain how it works. 4/4

Counts follow X rules: every link counts as 23 characters, other characters count once each. Sentences are kept whole and links are never split.

What Is a Thread Maker?

A thread maker is a text splitter that turns a long piece of writing into a sequence of posts that each fit a platform's character limit, numbered so readers can follow them in order. Instead of cutting every 280 characters, it breaks between sentences, keeps links intact and counts characters the way X does.

Paste an article, notes or markdown, choose the limit and numbering style, and copy the posts one by one or all at once.

How to Turn Text into a Thread

  1. Paste the text or markdown in the left pane. Headings, bold markers and link syntax are stripped when Strip markdown is on.
  2. Pick the limit: 280 for X, 500 for Threads or Mastodon, 4,000 for X Premium.
  3. Choose numbering (1/5, (1/5) or none) and whether it goes at the start or end of each post.
  4. Optionally add hashtags; they are added to the last post.
  5. Check the per-post counts, then use Copy on each post or Copy all.

Text Splitter Rules: Sentences, Links and Counters

The splitter works sentence by sentence. A sentence that is longer than the limit is broken at word boundaries, and a single word longer than the limit is cut only as a last resort. URLs are recognised before anything else so a link is never split and always counts as 23 characters. Abbreviations such as e.g. and initials do not end a sentence.

Numbering is reserved before packing, which is why a text to tweet split with ten posts leaves room for “10/10” on every post. The twitter thread generator output shows each post's count against the limit and flags anything over it in red.

Why Use This Thread Maker

Writing a thread in a single document and splitting it afterwards keeps the argument coherent, and markdown input means the same text can be a blog post, a LinkedIn post and a thread. The counts follow X's rules, the split respects sentences, and nothing is uploaded; the thread maker runs in your browser and you paste the posts yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a thread maker split text?

A thread maker breaks a long text into posts that fit the platform limit, cutting at sentence boundaries so no sentence is split across two posts. Paragraph breaks are kept where they fit, links are never cut, and each post gets a counter such as 1/5.

How are characters counted for X (Twitter)?

The twitter character counter follows X's rules: every link counts as 23 characters regardless of its length, because X wraps it with t.co, and other characters count once each. Some emoji and CJK characters count as two on X; the tool counts them as one, so leave a little margin.

What limits can I choose?

280 for X, Bluesky uses 300, 500 for Threads and Mastodon, and 4,000 for X Premium long posts. The numbering counter is included in the count, so a 280 post has about 275 characters for text.

Can I use markdown as the input?

Yes. With Strip markdown on, headings lose their # signs, **bold** and *italic* markers are removed, [link text](url) becomes “link text url” and list items get • bullets. Turn it off to split the text exactly as written.

Where do hashtags go?

Hashtags are appended to the last post so the first post stays clean. If they do not fit, they become a short final post of their own.
